History of Alamo Federal Credit Union

Alamo Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial institution created in January of 1930 by twelve postal employees. It was the first credit union established in San Antonio and the twelfth in the State of Texas.

In 1931, Alamo Postal Credit Union opened its main branch at the Downtown Post Office location at 615 E. Houston. The federal charter and bylaws were received by Alamo on December 6, 1938; thus becoming Alamo Federal Credit Union. On December 5, 1938, the organizational meeting was held and the interim Board of Directors were elected. The Interim Board consisted of the following members: M.R. Gerdes, President, H.F. Elley, Vice-President; and Adolph S. Anderson, Treasurer, A.J. Perner, Geo. M. Rance, B.W. Bradley, and H.F. Gill. The first annual membership meeting was held in January 1939. Documentation of this meeting notes that membership consisted of 359 members with share balances of $64,848, and loan balances of $67,032. In 1974, Alamo FCU’s main branch was relocated to the new Federal Building on Durango Street. In May of 1999, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new main office location where “The Alamo” was built to scale. Then on November 15, 1999, the main office moved into its new building at 6577 First Park Ten Blvd.
